Parents and imams from different areas of Pogradec attended the seminar on “Preventing violent extremism and radicalism by promoting democratic values and civic engagement”, organized by the Muslim Community of Albania and the Embassy of USA in Tirana in the framework of the project with the same name.
MCA deputy chairman, Mr. Gazmend Aga’s speech was focused on education as one of the key and the most important factors in preventing radicalism and violent extremism. Among other things, he spoke about the signs of extremism and better ways to prevent and solve this phenomenon.
US Embassy Representative Mr. Geoffrey Parker said that “we have become partners with the Muslim community to help raise awareness on this phenomenon and to show our children that conflict and violence will not give meaning to their lives.”
“The message we are given by the Muslim Community tells us that the meaning of your life comes from what you build, not from what you destroy. It comes from the help you give to a sick neighbour, by respecting laws and each-other in the community and from the engagement in your democratic society. These are the messages that we give children who participate in this program,” said Mr. Parker.
Mufti of Durres, Mr. Redi Quku in his speech emphasized that every citizen of this country should work hard to contribute to the prevention of violent extremism, whether it is religious, political or national. He also added that there is needed a close cooperation between civil society, organizations and state bodies.
The project “Preventing violent extremism and radicalism by promoting democratic values and civic engagement” is extended in the cities of Kavaja, Librazhd, Elbasan and Pogradec.
These activities are included in the framework of the Project for the promotion of democratic values and active citizenship among young people organized by the Muslim Community of Albania with the financial support of the US Embassy in Tirana.
